The world makes music, remember to listen.

Field Effects 11 offers a night of field recording-based sound art.

The eleventh in a series of concerts showcasing the use of found sound, found materials, and field recordings in media art, Field Effects 11 offers a night of quiet, subtle sound art in a comfortable environment.

Field Effects 11 features work by:

thuja (sf)

Thuja create barren landscapes, phantoms and crags, evoking the mysteries of the forest, fissures and smoldering seashores. Thuja's music is improvised and momentous, its noises quiet and precarious. A delicate melodic drama unfolds through an odd assortment of acoustic instruments, broken guitars, tinkling piano, rumbling organ swells and whispering accordion, suspended in abstract currents of treated percussion, electronics and sonified natural and man-made objects.

Loren Chasse, Steven R. Smith, Rob Reger and Glenn Donaldson formed Thuja in late 1998, and have since released four full-lengths on the Emperor Jones, Tumult and Last Visible Dog labels, as well as several EPs on their own Jewelled Antler imprint. Jewelled Antler also serves as the name of the prolific group of musicians in and around the band, who are involved in numerous projects further exploring outdoor recording, minimalist-folk, fragmented pop and other playful experiments in sound.

glenn bach (long beach)

Glenn Bach is a sound artist who maps the sonic terrain of the city through detailed sound walks, manipulated field recordings, sound drawings, and found poems. His four-track EP, diamond finesse, is out now on the Stasisfield label. He has performed his work in solo appearances and in improvisational group arrangements, including a recent appearance at Sound/Shift Oakland, and upcoming performances this summer at the Big Sur Experimental Music Festival and the CPEACH Summer Series in Eureka, California. He improvises with two other musicians as Luminous Flux, and directs a larger group, The Double Blind Ensemble, for his composed works. Bach is currently hosting Quiet, a series of concerts featuring various forms of quiet music in an intimate setting.

jim haynes (sf)

Of his work, Jim writes: 'I rust things. This statement runs the risk being glib, yet it is an accurate encapsulation of my ongoing activities with decay. While a portion of my work engages decay through the manipulation of oxidizing agents within a visual arena, I approach sound as a means to render the morphology of corrosion within a context that emphasizes duration and variation. Thus, the quest is to engage the drone supreme through symphonies of whirring machines, erratic electrical surges, and shortwave radio static; however, distractions and disruptions by the minutae of sound itself are not uncommon. There have been several publications of my work, most of which have been pitifully small private editions; however, due to the generosity of noted philanthropist Helen Scarsdale, the first major production is scheduled for release in July of 2003. Currently, I am active in Coelacanth, a sound art project with Loren Chasse, and have worked extensively within the music community, as a director for 23five, a non-profit organization dedicated to sound arts, as a writer for such publications as The Wire, Sound Projector, and the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and at Aquarius Records.'

The Field Effects series showcases artists who are interested in framing the hidden beauty of the everyday world: beauty on the surface, awaiting our attention. Beauty that must be delicately extracted. And beauty in potential, awaiting juxtaposition, collage, repetition and mutilation.

Seating mostly on futons to encourage comfortable deep listening and viewing. As I think we've bid farewell to Blasthaus' wonderful beanbags (thanks again, Blasthaus!), you may want to bring a pillow.

Depending on weather, hot or cold drinks will be available on a donation-based honor system. With luck, someone will bake cookies.
